Top Layers to Pack for Black Ski Weekend

Ski Jacket

When it comes to skiing, your top layer is perhaps the most critical piece of clothing in your arsenal. Your ski jacket is not only responsible for keeping you warm but also for protecting you from the elements, including wind, rain, and snow. When choosing a ski jacket for Black Ski Weekend, there are several factors to consider, including insulation, waterproofing, and breathability.

Insulation is essential for keeping you warm in cold temperatures. Down insulation is one of the most effective types of insulation, providing excellent warmth-to-weight ratios. However, down jackets can be expensive and not as effective in wet conditions. Synthetic insulation is another option that provides warmth, even when wet, and is generally more affordable than down jackets.

Waterproofing is another critical factor to consider when selecting a ski jacket. A good ski jacket should have a waterproof or water-resistant outer layer, with a waterproof membrane that prevents moisture from penetrating the jacket. Look for jackets with a high waterproof rating, at least 10,000mm, to ensure that you stay dry on the slopes.

Lastly, breathability is also important in a ski jacket. Skiing is a high-intensity sport, and you're likely to sweat as you ski down the slopes. A breathable jacket will allow moisture to escape, keeping you comfortable and dry. Look for jackets with a high breathability rating, at least 10,000g, for optimal performance.

When it comes to style, ski jackets come in various designs, colors, and patterns. You can choose a jacket that reflects your personality and personal style. However, functionality should always come first when selecting a ski jacket. With the right ski jacket, you'll stay warm, dry, and comfortable, allowing you to enjoy all the festivities that come with Black Ski Weekend.

For both of those trips, I wore the Gemyse Women's Mountain Waterproof Ski Snow Jacket, and Arias wore the Gemyse Men's Waterproof Jacket. This jacket was perfect for my first-time skiing and for the weather conditions in Breckenridge! It is insulated with comfortable fleece material and made with an outer shell fabric. It also has an internal snap skirt to prevent snow from penetrating the inside of the ski jacket. The jacket also comes in a variety of colors, so if you're planning to ski multiple days, you'll never have to wear the same jacket twice! It also comes with a detachable hood.

Ski Pants

Along with your ski jacket, your ski pants are essential for staying warm, dry, and comfortable on the slopes during Black Ski Weekend. Ski pants come in various styles, including bibs, salopettes, and regular pants. Regardless of the style, ski pants should be designed to protect you from the cold, wind, and snow. Like ski jackets, insulation is critical for keeping your legs warm in cold temperatures. Down insulation is an excellent option for ski pants, but synthetic insulation is also effective, especially in wet conditions.

Similar to your jacket, waterproofing and breathability are again important for ski pants. Look for pants with a high waterproof rating, at least 10,000mm, to ensure that you stay dry on the slopes. Look for pants with a high breathability rating, at least 10,000g, for optimal performance.

The Arctix Women's Insulated Snow Pants offered a great fit and were insulated with warm polyester lining. These pants also have additional lining and patches along the ankles to protect against shredding and daily wear-and-tear from your ski boots or boarding shoes. I purchased two pair:

Base Layers to Pack for Black Ski Weekend

Your base layer is the foundation of your skiing outfit and is essential for regulating your body temperature and keeping you comfortable on the slopes during Black Ski Weekend. The base layer is the layer closest to your skin and is responsible for wicking moisture away from your body, allowing you to stay dry and comfortable throughout the day.

When choosing a base layer for skiing, you should consider several factors, including material, fit, and warmth. Base layers come in various materials, including synthetic, wool, and silk. Synthetic materials like polyester are an excellent choice for base layers as they are lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying. Wool is another popular option as it is naturally odor-resistant, moisture-wicking, and provides excellent insulation.

The fit of your base layer is also important. It should be snug but not too tight, allowing for a full range of motion. Avoid base layers that are too loose or baggy, as they can trap moisture and cause discomfort.

Lastly, the warmth of your base layer will depend on the temperature and conditions on the slopes. A thicker base layer will provide more warmth but may not be suitable for milder temperatures. Consider layering multiple base layers for added warmth and versatility.

Overall, the base layer is a crucial component of your skiing outfit, providing insulation, moisture management, and comfort.

I purchased the Pisiqi Thermal Underwear Base Layer from Amazon. This set is essentially a Long John set that is super soft and very comfortable. It is also incredibly lightweight, so I had no problems with flexibility or with maneuvering while on the slopes. Because of its polyester material, it also has great wicking. I felt very warm while wearing this layer underneath my ski jacket. In fact, for most of my ski trip, this layer was the only layer that I wore underneath my ski jacket and ski pants.

(*Side Note: This base layer set is so comfortable and versatile, I even wear it underneath my scrubs when I work in the hospital!)

Choose a base layer that is appropriate for the temperature and conditions on the slopes, and you'll be well on your way to enjoying all the festivities that come with Black Ski Weekend.

Mid Layer (Optional):

Mid layers are worn on top of your base layers and underneath the ski jacket. Sometimes, this layer can be optional, depending on how cold your ski destination is. When we traveled to Breckenridge in November, the high temperatures ranged between 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit. For colder temperatures with heavier snowfall, a mid layer is more essential.

Similar to base layers, mid layers should have a balance of good wicking, insulation, and breathability. These layers tend to be fleeces or light jackets/vests. For my mid layer, I wore an LL Bean Fleece jacket. A similar jacket can be found on Amazon HERE.

Other Accessories to Pack for Black Ski Weekend:

Goggles

When it comes to snow goggles, you don't necessarily have to be picky about what brand or which type to buy...especially if it's your first time skiing. The important thing is to just own a pair! Snow and ice reflects UV light, so if you're exposed to snow and ice for long periods of time without proper eye protection, it can cause damage to your corneas, more commonly known as snow blindness. So get a pair of snow goggles!

When choosing goggles, it is important to consider several factors, including lens type, lens color, and fit. Lens type is one of the most important considerations when choosing goggles for skiing. There are two main types of lenses available: cylindrical and spherical. Cylindrical lenses are flat and offer less peripheral vision, while spherical lenses are curved and offer a wider field of vision. Spherical lenses are typically more expensive, but they provide better visibility and are more comfortable to wear.

Lens color is another factor to consider when choosing goggles. Different lens colors are suitable for different weather conditions. For example, yellow or amber lenses are ideal for low-light conditions, while darker lenses are better for sunny days. Mirror coatings on lenses can also be beneficial for reducing glare on sunny days.

Fit is essential when choosing goggles for skiing. Goggles should fit snugly to your face without being too tight, and they should not leave any gaps between the goggles and your skin. A good fit will prevent snow and wind from getting into your eyes, and it will ensure that your goggles stay in place during high-intensity activities.

Overall, goggles are a crucial accessory for skiing during Black Ski Weekend, providing protection for your eyes and enhancing your visibility on the slopes. Choose goggles with the right lens type and color for your needs, and ensure a proper fit for optimal comfort and performance. With the right goggles, you'll be able to see clearly and enjoy all the fun activities that come with Black Ski Weekend.

I purchased the Outdoor Master Ski Goggles at a good price. They offered anti-fog features and good UV protection.

Ski Socks:

Ski socks are an often overlooked but crucial component of your skiing outfit during Black Ski Weekend. They provide warmth, cushioning, and moisture management, keeping your feet comfortable and dry throughout the day.

When choosing ski socks, it is important to consider several factors, including material, thickness, and fit. Wool socks are an excellent choice for skiing as they are naturally warm, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant. Synthetic blends like polyester are also effective as they are quick-drying and breathable.

The thickness of your ski socks will depend on the temperature and conditions on the slopes. Thicker socks provide more cushioning and warmth but may be too hot for milder temperatures. Consider layering multiple pairs of socks for added warmth and versatility.

The fit of your ski socks is also essential for comfort and performance. They should fit snugly but not be too tight, allowing for good circulation and range of motion. Avoid socks that are too loose, as they can bunch up and cause discomfort or blisters.

It's important to buy socks that are specifically designated as ski socks. Normal cotton socks do not have good wicking ability, so if they get wet, your feet will certainly feel soaked and cold. Do not underestimate the importance of good socks, so feel free to splurge on these. WEIERYA Ski Socks were perfect and kept my feet very warm during my ski trip to Breckenridge.

Knee Pads:

While knee pads are not a necessary item for skiing during Black Ski Weekend, they can provide added protection and support for your knees, which can be helpful during high-intensity activities on the slopes. Knee pads are especially beneficial for skiers who have a history of knee injuries or who are prone to knee pain. They can help absorb shock and reduce the impact of falls or collisions, making skiing a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Knee pads come in various styles, including soft foam or hard shell designs, and can be worn over or under your ski pants. If you're considering knee pads, be sure to choose a pair that fits well and does not restrict your range of motion. I purchased this pair before my trip and came back home with unscarred knees! Yay me!

Snow Boots: (stylish, not for skiing): Dream Pairs

Boot Dryer: Kooder Boot Dryer

Neck Warmer: Turtle Fur
